Sruti School of Liturgical Music, Orthodox Seminary, Kottayam

Sruti School of liturgical music began functioning with an informal inauguration by H. H. Moran Mar Thoma Mathews I, the former Catholicos, in September, 1988. The initial project proved to be an immense success with 50 students participating and completing the course which involved the basics of music, such as its theory, musical notation, and liturgical and instrumental music. The programme also proved to be immensely helpful in assisting local parishes to organize their services through the assistance of these students

The formal inauguration of the School was held on 9th January 1989 at the Orthodox Theological Seminary. His Holiness Theoktist, The Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church was the Chief Guest and he inaugurated the School in the Presence of H. H. Moran Mar Thoma Mathews I, Catholicos of the East and Dr. Paulos Mar Gregorios (Former Principal of Orthodox Seminary). The first batch of the students was officially enrolled in the two year diploma course in April 1989. Diplomas were awarded to the students who successfully completed the course

The School constructed its own building in 1993. H.H. Baselios Mar Thoma Mathews II blessed and opened the building. The building consists of class room halls, conference rooms, library, book shop, recording studio and room for delegates. The interests of students in the various expressions of music encouraged the school to offer courses in Light Music and Western music in 1995

Now the school has widened its horizon to include Certificate courses in Syriac, Carnatic, Western and Instrumental music. The courses offered are taught by outstanding exponents in their respective music field. This has enabled Sruti to become an outstanding and excellent centre for studying music

The school has an excellent library of over 1000 music books, manuscripts and rare collection of CD’s which was inaugurated by H H Baselios Mar Thoma Didymos I in 2005. The library attracts large number of students and experts in music for their referral work.
